Blaine's GROWTH - More Than Just Housing
We all know that Blaine has seen tremendous housing growth in the past five years. Blaine ranked number one in the metro area for housing permits in both 2002 and 2003 with 520 and 527 permits respectively. We are on pace to do as many if not more permits in 2004 and into the near future. Blaine's residential growth continues to see a wide range of life-cycle housing going up in central and northern Blaine, offering quality living for all types of families.

With those new housing opportunities has come something that the Blaine City Council has been trying to attract for some time, more restaurants. Blaine has opened over 47 food and beverage establishments in just the past three years alone. This list includes everything from the new coffee shops, fast food and sit-down restaurants including the new restaurants Hankering's All Day Grill, Majors, Time Out, and Carol's. More new restaurants are on the way such as Chili's, Camille's Sidewalk Cafe, and Caffvino that are currently under construction. These restaurants help to add to Blaine's quality of fife by offering a wide range of entertainment opportunities right here at home.

Maybe not as visible, but equally important is the growth in Blaine commercial and industrial development. Quality commercial and industrial developments are the lifeblood of any community. They offer good paying, local jobs to Blaine's residents and contribute to a healthy, diversified tax base, helping to keep residential taxes low while funding quality services.

In the last five years, Blaine has experienced over 1 million square feet of industrial development and expansion with plans for over 1.5 million square feet in the next five years. Commercial development has boomed with over 1.5 million square feet of new retail centers and businesses such as The Village, Victory Village and National Market Center. Over one million more square feet is planned for the next five years. Some of Blaine's existing retail centers have seen redevelopment over the last few years such as Northgate Mall and Blaine Town Center. Some improvements are also on the horizon for Northtown Mall in the near future.

The Blaine City Council, city staff, and development community have been working hard to provide balanced growth and quality housing, jobs, retail, and entertainment opportunities for Blaine's residents. Check out some of the new entertainment and shopping opportunities around town. Blaine is becoming a diverse community with something for everyone.
